The stateline area west of Beloit is filled with not only working farms, but folks living peacefully in the country. Not wealthy people, but people concerned about wildlife, our waters and environment. For decades, we have been involved in protecting our wetlands, prairie lands, oak savannas, and wildlife. Just in our immediate area along the stateline of Illinois and Wisconsin, the proposed location of this rail line would impact the Sugar River and its Forest Preserve, Colored Sands Bird Sanctuary, and Nygren Wetlands - a refuge to many migrating birds whose numbers have already declined in this area due to habitat depletion. It would impact the restoration of prairie lands underway at Beckman Mill Park and Mill Pond. Toxins from this railway would impact the cleanliness and safety of the Rock River, and leach into cropland soil that is so vital for the livelihoods of farmers in this area. The proposed plan for this rail line is extremely poorly thought out. Quite frankly, it only benefits its private owners. The rail line will directly harm the people and wildlife in this region, and will destroy the way of life for many.
