I am opposed to the Great Lakes Basin Railroad. I live on Cemetery Rd. two miles from the apple orchard (Edward's)that will be directly impacted by the railroad. Children from Rockford and surrounding smaller cities come to that orchard to get an exposure to farm life and to learn how things grow. This is God's country. I can walk into my back yard and am overwhelmed by the beauty of nature, from Eagles and Bluebirds, to wild deer and turkeys not to mention the sounds of neighbors horses and cows. Our garden and yard that has been 20 years in the making with walnut trees, fruit trees, blueberry bushes and the like will certainly lose its property value. We are doing our best to decrease our carbon footprint. Why can't Great Lakes make improvement to existing rail lines? I can't see how this will improve jobs in Winnebago County. We have already seen what happened to Winnebago County when Chicago closed Cabrini Green and those people moved to Rockford. The west side of Rockford is a war zone. My girlfriend was evacuated from her home in Rockford when there was a rail derailment of hazardous material in her neighborhood. You can't say it doesn't happen. What if the water supply in this area was contaminated? Fix the roads and the bridges and transport via trucks and if the destination is Milwaukee why not ship on barges using Lake Michigan? Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
