I oppose the Great Lakes Basin Railroad construction project. This railway would destroy wetlands which would affect the normal watershed of rivers. In addition, farm land would be purchased at the loss of production and hardship for the farmers including additional expense of insuring rail crossings each year. Potential with this railway would be derailment which could allow toxic chemicals to contaminate the water supply of 1,000's of citizens. If toxic chemicals were involved, this could cause evacuations of 5 - 6 miles surrounding the rail line. This could potentially affect large portions of Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park. Also affected, would be the evacuation of major hospitals. This rail line would be privately owned and for profit...NOT for the good of the citizens of the this area. To seize private land for a private corporation is a violation of eminent domain which was created to acquire land for public thoroughfares, not to promote the interest of private enterprise.
