I have a number of concerns regarding the plans of the Great Lakes Basin Railroad to run a track from Milton, Wisconsin to northern Indiana. This track would run through my county, Winnebago. It would take approximately 6,300 acres of land from local farmers. Farm fields would be divided, making some fields too small for modern equipment to farm. Some homes and buildings would have to be moved. Not only this, the local farmers would have to foot a $2,500-$5,000 bill per year to insure the rail crossings over their land. Farms are not the only thing slated to suffer should this plan proceed to reality. Important wetlands would have to be filled in leaving the potential for local lands to flood. Should there be derailment, or leaking of pipe lines in the 50 foot wide area designated in the rail corridor, a huge disaster could take place as the earmarked cargo is believed to be crude oil. It is preposterous to think eminent domain could even be thought of for this project. Profit for private enterprise is the motive, not public use. Thank you.
