To whom it may Concern, I am a railroad worker in the Chicago region and a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way railroad union. The owners of The GLBT keep citing the congestion of rail traffic getting into Chicago. I'm not sure if you are aware but the Federal Government granted over $70 million to the state of Indiana creating what is called the Indiana Gateway project. Long story short it is creating a third main line for Norfolk Southern to help alleviate train traffic congestion from Elkhart to Chicago. The Ns lines that this affects also has connections for most of the class 1 railroads. I feel this is important information that has not been addressed and that they are jumping the gun to jam a railroad down in Lowell, In. This project is still being completed. I also feel that the glbt railroad does not need to be built through Lowell, IN. NS already has a couple lines that run close by out of Kankakee and a line that runs to Knox, Indiana that is out of service that could be reconditioned if need be. The Kankakee line runs maybe 3-4 trains a day and in the recent years NS has dumped millions of dollars into this line to reconditioning and repairs of this line and can handle a lot more traffic. The Kankakee Line that connects at Knox connects to the NS B Line which runs from Chicago to Fort Wayne and into Ohio. My point is that the necessary rail infrastructure is already in place without the need to add more and steal land from the farmers in Lowell Indiana and surrounding areas.
