In regard to the rail yard being proposed between Manteno and Grant Park, I agree with all the concerns that have been brought up in the meetings and literature; particularly, the concerns about water runoff and the disruption of the natural flow of water; not to mention, the decrease in land values. However, there are a couple of points that have not been mentioned. This rail yard will be operating 24 hrs., 7 days a week. The noise, vibration, and air pollution are obvious, but what about the enormous amount of light pollution? An incredible amount of power will be required, stressing the power grid. The night sky will be lit up every night, disrupting the life cycles of plants and wildlife. Secondly, rail yards are very dangerous places to work. The nearest hospital is in Kankakee, over 20 miles away. Longer response times due to railroad crossings and road closures could become a major factor. Is a new hospital part of the GLB proposal, because they are probably going to need one. It would seem that the GLB project is not in the public's, or the environment's best interests.
