On behalf of my family's business and our clientele, I am writing to express our strong opposition to the proposal put forth by the Great Lakes Basin Transportation for their railroad project. Our campground is located on the Kankakee River and it's associated wetlands common to the the area involved in the GLBT proposed project. Our assessment of the information we have seen on the project leads us to believe that the environmental degradation and the disruption of the quiet needed for such businesses such as ours and others, including Shaw-waw-nas-see 4-H camp and the Kankakee River State Park will severely impact our businesses and will degrade the tourism industry in our county. It is impossible to provide access to the spectacular natural wonders of our county to tourists when the noise from trains keeps them awake all night. Our business has already struggled because of the immense number of trains going through the town of Momence. An increase in the volume of trains is a frightening thought. In addition, our businesses rely heavily on the quality of the water resources in this area, most notably the Kankakee River and it's associated wetlands. We are devoted to protecting these valuable wetlands and educating the public about the importance of this type of ecosystem. Finally, we are also farmers in the area who value this family heritage in our county. We implore you to consider the stress that you are putting on an already challenging occupation, which has struggled locally with the extreme weather (severe floods, winds, tornados and intermittent drought) over the last decade. Please heed the will of a majority of the counties that oppose this project. Please protect this valuable land that we love.
