Our family lives 2 miles north of the proposed rail line in Porter County, where there is currently very little noise and air pollution. If this rail line is built, I'm concerned about the amount of noise and air pollution that will be created. How will the length and number of trains daily, along with speed affect our noise and air pollution, day and night? I'm also concerned about how often derailments will happen along the line as train speeds increase to 70 mph and as train traffic increases eventually up to 110 trains per day. Will an unacceptable probability of derailments require lower speeds or require Class 1 Railroads to use rail cars that have been updated to the highest possible standards in order to use the new line? I'm also concerned about safety, since this proposed rail line would help move an enormous amount of hazardous materials. Extensive and ongoing training would be needed for all first responders along the line. Also, how will dozens of mile long trains, travelling on 2 tracks, affect school bus travel times? The current proposed rail line splits Porter Township in half, each school bus would cross multiple crossings morning and afternoon. Because of these concerns, I'm opposed to the proposed GLBR project.
