Dear Safety Transportation Board, We live in a rural area of La Porte, Indiana, at the end of GLBT's proposed project. A move we made some 15 years ago. We have many concerns for our neighbors and community ....especially with congestion/noise, emergency, and environmental issues. Our town already struggles with traffic congestion. 3 highways intersecting downtown, 1 more on the outskirts, RR tracks just 3 short blocks away from the main drag and one over pass. Now add up to 110 more trains a day. Think about it. That's one train every 13 minutes on top of the existing freight and AMtrack trains. Honk!! Honk!! Oh, the noise. We can always keep the windows close. Fresh air is over rated any way. Now try to stay calm. We would hate to call for an ambulance. Which leads us to our next concern. How will this effect emergency response time? We live 5 miles from the hospital in town, but on the other side of tracks. A fire, for a volunteer fire department beating the clock is everything. What about an accident along this proposed line, who bears the cost for additional training and equipment, not to mention the environmental impact. La Porte is a farm community with several lakes in and around the town. The land and the water are our main resources. What happens in case of any potential RR accident or simply pollution over time. Can I still drink my well water? Are the fish safe to eat? Can I enjoy the lake? The land, what about our crops and the cattle that graze them? Is it worth it??? It is for these reasons, that we respectfully request that the STB deny Docket No. FD35952 Great Lakes Basin Transportation Corp, LLC Project. Sincerely, Timothy & Barbara Messmann
