I have examined some of the impacts from the building of the proposed GLBT railroad and I strongly oppose its being allowed to move forward through the STB. The rail line is designed to transport over 2000 hazardous materials and chemicals, one of which is dilbet( diluted bitumen with peatane or natural gas liquids) from tar sands in Alberta Canada. It has been found that the very same explosive mixture(72% nitumen 28% diluent) needed to send this crude thru pipe lines is also being loaded into tank cars. This mixture is just as explosive as Bakken crude. It now has a lowered flash point from 330'F to 95'F which makes the mixture a traveling bomb! Both Bakken and dilbit would be allowed to be shipped on the proposed GLBT rail line. The current 1232 standard allows inferior tank cars, as can be seen in many recent derailments with leaks and explosions, to be used to haul this very dangerous crude. Lowell voluntary fire department isn't equipped to deal with this type of disaster. In the event of a disaster the shippers let the railroads fend for themselves and are sorely under insured to handle claims, so they file for bankruptcy and leave the people in the immediate area deal with unpaid expenses. It is time for US Regulators to put public safety ahead of the profits of the oil and rail industries. Please stop the GLBT railroad from being allowed to proceed with building this monster railroad.
