The proposed Great Lakes Basin Railway will have tremendous costs placed on those forced to live near these tracks. The constant noise will be bad enough, but the STB needs to also account for the added stress that this line will cause as the dust and dirt form the line will necessitate more frequent dusting and window washing for those living along this line. This added burden on homeowners and tenants needs to be addressed. While many would consider this a small matter, it is not. Homes become dirty faster when they live near transportation systems. How is the STB and GLB going to control dust, engine smoke and other pollutants from adding to the cleaning burdens homes currently have? Not to mention the health effects from breathing in these pollutants. How too will the damage to the paint and sidings on homes and buildings be addressed? Trains are notoriously dirty and this dirt will lead to much additional work when cleaning homes in the area, it may also lead to damage being done to buildings along the route, as smoke and dust is propelled from the train. Please also address the health effects on the populations forced to live by these new, un-needed, new rail lines.
