I am opposed to the Great Lakes Basin's proposal for a new rail line. While there are numerous environmental issues associated with the proposal I would like to address the noise associated with the proposed line. Noise Pollution - In 2005 the volume of the horns was increased in an effort to increase safety. The increased volume is injurious to those living in close proximity of the proposed line. It is also disruptive to others living within several miles of the line. The noise also has the potential to lower property values. I personally had difficulty selling my previous home due to the increased noise from trains. Alternative Alignments - There are already numerous east/west rail lines in northern Indiana. Adding a new line to La Porte increases the saturation of rail lines and limits the amount of noise free area in which to live. While bypassing Chicago has it's advantages, this line could connect with other established lines further west, minimizing the impact to people, wildlife and the land.
