This communication is to indicate my opposition to the Great Lakes Basin railroad (GLB) project in an attempt to help preserving the peaceful, serene atmosphere of Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See and its natural beauty. Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See was founded by the 4-H foundation in 1946 and dedicated to veterans of WWII. Over the last seventy years it has served the camping needs of hundreds of thousands of campers. It is a place of peace and serenity in a world of noise pollution. Each year thousands of campers attend this venue for camping, wedding ceremonies and receptions, retreats, picnics, pool parties and hiking the beautiful Rock Creek and wooded trails. These activities are threatened by the proposed Great Lakes Basin railroad project. Rock Creek flows through Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See in a deep canyon with a series of natural caves originally used by the Native Americans that once inhabited our land. It is one of the most scenic waterways and geologically unique properties in northern Illinois. The GLB project has real potential to adversely impact the creek, the entire watershed and the camp environment. The projected train traffic is up to 110 trains per day or one every 20 minutes. Noise and vibrations from this project would be less than half a mile from the camp facilities. Train traffic, noise and vibration day and night will render the camp much less desirable and affect the quality of camp programming.
