I am writing out of concern for the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad. I am a farmer and resident in the surrounding area of the railroad and my concern is that the environment is going to be drastically changed if the railroad is to go through. Not only will drainage issues arise from the railroad being built, but that if a derailment is to occur, then contaminants will pollute the ground water and render the land useless for farming or wreck neighboring woodlands. Also emergency management personal will not be able to contain the spill because the local fire department is all volunteer. If roads are closed then more travel time will be needed to respond to emergencies and my time on the road with farm equipment will be lengthened. More time on the road with equipment is dangerous because people drive erratic around equipment. Also more tracks to cross is not good either because more accidents could happen. A solution to the supposed problem of rail congestion is using abandon or other underutilized routes to bypass trains. These routes would be cheaper to upgrade than to build a whole new railroad. These are some of my concerns.
