I was recently informed about the GLB railroad through my grandmother, Linda Mertens. (starbaby1031@gmail.com) I am 12 and have loved coming out to my grandmother's country house since the first time I visited. I have countless memories of happy moments, fun times, sad times, scary times, and the views of the country side. If this GLB nonsense comes through, every new memory made here will include the annoying noise of a train less than 2.5 miles away. I would not be happy. Also, I have a friend in Grant Park. According to this foolish plan, Grant Park goes bye bye along with Summer Township (according to the email my grandmother forwarded to me) and gets replaced by a 15,000 acre rail yard. First of all, the idea of replacing an area where a decent amount of people live with a rail yard is crazy. A 15,000 acre rail yard is outrageous! After poking around some more in the email, I realized a statement relating this project to the Taxation of Railroads, Other Transportation Companies, and Other Businesses" (State Board of Equalization and Assessment) Somehow, (don't know how due to my short attention span) the GLB railroad would be paying a whopping total of ZERO! in taxes, leaving us to pay for something most people either don't know of yet or don't want. Yes, the email says that the people who would be affected by this nincompoop project HAVEN'T BEEN NOTIFIED! Say you're so excited because you finally can afford a new kitchen remodel! It's been 8 years since your last one. Then you check your mail and it's been decided that a rail road track is running through your house and you will need to move. Outrageous! Also in the email, the Kankakee County would make an average of agricultural income would be DECREASED BY 4.58%! In the long term, that'a a lot. 5 years would be A 22.9% DECREASE from without this stupid railroad. According to a letter my grandmother recieved noting a few discussion points, Frank Patton started a software company. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO START A RAILROAD IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE IN RAILROADS OF LEGAL STUFF OF RAILROADS!!!!??? Idiotic if you ask me. Building this railroad could interfere with this area's state park. "Oh my! A train derailed because it ran over a deer!" This whole thing is a long shot and nobody wants it, so why are we still discussing it? Just call the whole thing off! This will do NOTHING to benefit the people living in Kankakee County, and I hope my point is clear."
