Comment EI-24287

Received or sent (printed as 7/2/2016)

Route Selection: 1. Proposed route in Lake County, IN between Mile Post 43.5 abd 47.5 takes a lot of productive farm land out of use where a more direct route would conserve acreage. 2. An alternative route has already been surveyed and acquisition of land started for the Illiana Corridor project from Interstate 65 near Mile Marker 241. Several months ago in 2015, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner removed the Illiana Corridor project from the state budget. (Please note, the Illiana Corridor has been talked about for over 50 years that I know of and may not get off the ground for another 50 years.) Using the surveyed plat the GLBT right of way would be changed from the vicinity of MP 36 to go straight West and link up in the vicinity of MP 56 in Illinois. This proposal will decrease the amount of tillable acreage taken out of Lake County, IN. Energy Usage: • The entire route should be electrified. This will minimize carbon emissions used in connecting trunk lines with GLBT. If the projected growth anticipated is what the petitioners believe, then this accommodation should not be a problem. Rail Line Orientation: • For the most part, the designated route should be elevated to avoid grade crossings with highway traffic. Viaducts should be wide enough to accommodate not less than four lanes of traffic and high enough to comply with Interstate Highway design standards. . If the projected growth anticipated is what the petitioners believe, then this accommodation should not be a problem.
