I am writing on behalf of the La Porte County Park Foundation Board of Directors regarding the Great Lakes Basin Rail Line proposal. Our Park Foundation is a 501 (c)3 organization that supports the La Porte County Parks Department in Indiana. We are very concerned about the current proposed route of the GLB, especially in the area near Westville, IN. That route runs within 100 yards of the Bluhm County Park, a gem of a park which our foundation played a key role in establishing. The property has been developed into a popular location for family outings, hiking, birding, horseback and bike riding, and other leisure activities. It features a dog park, playgrounds, spectacular wildflowers, and trails. A busy high-speed rail line in near proximity to this park would be a major detriment to all these amenities and the quiet beauty of the environment. We are asking for further consideration when it comes to this route near the park. Our Foundation is not taking a stand about the problems or benefits of the rail line, however we do ask that a different route be considered in the Westville area, especially in regards to Bluhm County Park.
