I am a homeowner along the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad. I have a question which I have not seen addressed in regards to liability if a train derails and contaminates or destroys our property. Do I as a homeowner have to carry railroad insurance just like you would flood insurance? And is there even such a thing? I would not trust that the railroad would be able to cover our loss or others in the event there was a major derailment.
