Just wanted to give a little background on part of this article. The 90 acres along US Hwy 30 that Purdue purchased 10 years ago was the farm I grew up on. It was owned by Richard & Marjorie Grass, Mabel & Oscar Grass before that and Edward & Mabel Thineman prior to that. A farm now in the fourth generation. My dad, Richard Grass, sold the majority of his farm to Pinney-Purdue for the sole reason he wanted it to stay in agricultural land. Now that is being threatened. Even though we don't own the 90 acres any more it is still a very big part of my family. My dad was a farmer in every sense of the word. It wasn't easy, he didn't get rich from it, but it was who he was and was happy doing. Frank Patton has been quoted as saying he is doing this rail line as a legacy for his children and grandchildren. My dad was an unassuming man who wanted the same thing for his family. Only difference is he did it the right way, making sure the land he loved kept giving into the future without taking away someone else's legacy. Richard & Marjorie Grass, Phillip Grass, John Grass, Patricia Grass Evans, Diane Grass Matthys, Carol Grass Misch, Shane Grass, Amber Grass Barnes, Michael Evans, Katie Evans Pottle, Adam Matthys, Joel Mathys, David Matthys, Nick Misch, and Lexi Misch these are names you may not remember after you finish reading this but they are my parents legacy. As are thousands of other names of each farmer's legacy. Share this to stop Great Lakes Basin Railroad project. And with this being Mother's Day I would be negligent in not pointing out my mother, Marjorie Grass, who was by my father's side for nearly 50 years on this very farm.
