The Kankakee River has been designated as a National Recreational Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Great Lakes Basin Railroad (GLBR) project proposes to pass through Kankakee River State Park in Kankakee County, IL. How absurd. The Kankakee River and Kankakee River State Park are both severely endangered by the proposed railway. The GLBR project should not be allowed to pass through Kankakee River State Park. Additionally, any proposed new railway should be routed wherever possible through already industrialized areas, not through productive farmland or residential areas. The GLBR project severely violates this principle. The GLBR project should not be allowed as proposed.
