Lake and Porter counties in Indiana are both mandated Clean Air Car Check Vehicle Emissions Testing Program areas. This is to make sure vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties do not emit more than the allowable amount of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen. If cars are forced to wait at grade crossings for passing trains or having to drive long distances to go around roads that have been closed, this will increase the amount of emissions being released into these counties as opposed to the amount of emissions if this rail line was not built.
