Mr. Navecky, I'm writing in regards to the proposed Great Lakes Basin railroad project. I agree with the points made in the letter attached, but also want to add my own comments. The proposed project will cause many more problems. . .for the farmers whose land is disrupted, for the emergency responders in these rural towns, for the environment. . .than it would solve(congested rail traffic through Chicago). If this is something truly needed, then why aren't the major railroads on board? Most likely, because it's being pushed and maneuvered through the system by a group who is simply in it for the profit. . .no other reason. I live in a suburb of Chicago, and have a train line going through my town. Quite frankly, I enjoy hearing the train whistle going through.. .but I'm hearing it from several miles away. The route for this project, as it's proposed, will slice through the counties in a way that suddenly will put 100+(so they say) freight trains per day going dangerously close to so many farms & homes. In some cases, on their doorsteps. At the very least, the route should be looked at VERY carefully, and perhaps could be routed next to established highways. . .this would be the safest & most logical approach. Take a visit to the Illiinois farmland this proposed railroad will slice through. Take time to listen, and think about all the care the farmers have given to this land through the years. Feel the heritage of the area, see the people who enjoy the recreational aspects of the area(such as canoeing the Fox River). This railroad would take away a great deal from the livelihoods and enjoyment of the people in rural Illinois. We must find a different solution to the congestion issue, one that is more acceptable to all the citizens. . .not just a few businessmen out for a quick dollar. Please look closely at this issue, and make wise decisions!! Thank you! Susan Scheppler
