I am writing in regards to the proposed GLB railroad. I have several concerns about this proposal. I live in the proposed rail yard. We are blessed to have 3 creeks running through this section of Manteno, which then runs into the Kankakee River. My concern is all the oil that will leak when the trains are hydraulically hooked and unhooked, eventually running off into the water supply. I am also concerned about possible spills that will then contaminate the water supply as well. The Kankakee River is used for drinking water, and contaminating it could lead to some serious problems. These creeks are home to several wildlife species as well, which could greatly disrupt their natural habitat. My next concern is the loss of farmland. They aren't making any new farmland ever, so taking up 15,000 acres for a railyard to me is a little overdone. The proposed size of the railyard is more than twice the size of Ohare Airport. Is he truly going to use this land for just a railyard, or trying to buy up land cheaply to then sell for more money to other industries. I truly hope that you will take these concerns into your decision making process.
