On June 3, 2016 U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell designated the 133 mile Kankakee River Water Trail in northwest Indiana and northeastern Illinois as a national water trail. The proposed GLBT rail line route that would run east of Lowell, IN would be just north of the wetlands that was once known as the Grand Kankakee Marsh. All of this land was drained around 1900 when the Kankakee River channel was dug. This means that any chemical spills this close to the wetlands can migrate into the wetlands via field tiles and drainage ditches and make its way to the Kankakee River causing irreversible contamination and destruction of this newly recognized national water trail. With the already proven potential of train accidents and derailments leading to oil and chemical spills, I believe this is too great of an irreversible risk if the GLBT rail line is approved.
