I have major environmental concerns regarding the proposed Great Lakes Basin Rail project. I live within very close proximity of the proposed rail yard. I am very concerned for the welfare of my neighbors, my family and especially my young children when I think about the type of environmental impact these trains, possibly carrying hazardous materials, WILL have to the surrounding area. Since this proposed rail yard is 5-6 times larger than the largest rail yard in the U.S., and possibly the world, there is bound to be a massive increase of air and noise pollution, possible contamination of water supplies and deterioration of valuable soil on farm land. A rail yard of this size will be nothing but detrimental to the surrounding environment. The increase in truck traffic alone, coming in and out of the rail yard to load and unload materials, will increase hazardous materials into the soil and air. Both local wildlife and people will either get sick or be driven out of their homes due to the deterioration of the environment surrounding the proposed rail yard. And, do I dare even mention the possibility of a derailment or spill of hazardous materials in the area? The GLB is going to put many lives in jeopardy. Please, for the sake of our environment, as well as the health and safety of all living things, do not allow the GLB to proceed. Thank you!
