Picture planting 4 inch diameter trees with a root ball of 30 inches and 18-24 inches deep. Now imagine planting these trees where the top soil is just as deep. We do not have to see this in the mind's eye. It is an actual experience. Over the past 40 years, we have landscaped our yard with trees and shrubs. We never run out of top soil. This God-given asset must be preserved. It is for this reason we strongly oppose Great Lakes Basin Railroad. Soil of this quality must not be needlessly thrown aside. So what if oil tanker trains need a few more days to reach the destination point. People will survive. However, food is a different story. Food is a necessity. Fertile soils took thousands of years to develop. Productive agricultural land is a finite, irreplaceable natural resource. Farm land must be protected. Cast aside the Great Lakes Basin Railroad.
