Docket No. FD 35952 Environmental Comments The average number of train derailments in the United States is three (3) per day. Many of these derailments create very serious environmental issues that include ground water contamination and contamination of rivers and streams. This causes death and destruction to wildlife and human life as well as plant life. The proposed Great Lakes Basin Rail Line has been promoted as a high speed rail line that will carry only freight, the majority of which will be up to two thousand (2000) types of hazardous materials. These trains could be up to one hundred (100) cars each and could be up to a mile long traveling up to seventy (70) miles per hour. The proposed route shows many turns and curves along the way which would create an even greater risk of derailment. I am attaching a file citing ten (10) recent examples of disastrous derailments. Many of these were not high speed trains. For these reasons among others we are requesting that you and the Surface Transportation Board (STB) deny this project from going forward. Thank you.
