• Docket: FD 35952 • GLBT proposed rail line Attention: Dave Navecky Environmental comment Derailment of a locomotive, train car full of crude oil, ethanol or hazardous chemicals in the Kankakee River would be an environmental disaster. What about a spill near the river on the banks or natural drainage to the Kankakee River? The village of Wilmington IL draws its drinking water from the Kankakee River and is only several miles downstream. The Kankakee River is no place for an environmental disaster. The Braidwood Nuclear Generating Stations cooling lake also draws its water from the Kankakee River. The Nuclear plants pumping station is only a few miles downstream from the proposed GLBR Bridge inside the Kankakee River State Park. There are three large pumps inside the pumping station. The pumps are rated at 24,000 gallons per minute each, two pumps run almost daily 24/7.The pumps make-up water to the cooling lake on a daily basis to make up for evaporation from the cooling lake. The cooling lake is 2600 acres. Environmental damage from a spill in or drainage too the Kankakee River would cause disastrous environment damage. Before the pumps at the pumping station were shut off, the rivers current would move the spill to the pumping station and would contaminate the 2600 acre cooling lake. This would not only kill wildlife in the Kankakee River but also the Braidwood cooling lake and contaminate Wilmington’s drinking water. Why would the GLBR cross the Kankakee River at all? The environmental risks are too great for wildlife, the public and the environment. The GLBR should avoid crossing one of the cleanest rivers in the country, the Kankakee River. This railroad would be inconsistent with the public convenience and necessity therefor please deny GLBR request to construct this railroad. Tom Hinspeter Salina Township, Bonfield, Illinois
