Three years ago, we made the decision to return to IN in our retirement. We chose Westville for its quiet, rural/small town atmosphere. It was also centrally located among three hospitals and their doctors. As we have lived here, we have enjoyed the quiet and chose those doctors that we have established a relationship and have confidence in. As we look at the proposal, our access to those hospitals and doctors, as well as any emergency responders will be challenged in all three directions. Although, we are told that the RR will use overpasses on Rt. 421, 2 and 6, the construction of such will still have a negative impact on the time involved in accessing urgent care. We are also concerned of the environmental impact on Westville's wells and sewer treatment plant, the proximity to several county parks that serve as wildlife and wildflower sanctuaries, and the impact that those overpasses might have on the businesses near the RR. The Westville Schools are also right in the target" zone. Any derailments or spillages could be a major disaster for the people of the town. We understand from the town board that the proposed RR would cut off the area of town that is planned for commercial development. Each spring and fall, the Sand Hill Cranes stop over in the Kankakee River Basin on their migration. Any RR development that would disrupt the amount of water, etc. in the marsh lands would have a negative effect on the cranes. One of the first things we noticed the spring we moved back to Indiana was the warbling of the cranes as they flew overhead to feeding grounds and back to the marsh for the night."
