I'm writing to state my opposition to the proposed Great Lakes Basin railroad. The double tracks and trains would be very visible and audible from our home. We already have trains running perpendicular to the proposed line and they are close to our home and loud. We are concerned about even greater property taxes due to drainage costs or the opposite concern of plunging property values because no one will want to buy a house with a huge railroad right behind it. We also wish to keep the large amount of wildlife we enjoy with our rural setting. And finally, I question the motivation behind this plan. Is this the best plan to alleviate stated congestion in Chicago? Is it an overall benefit to add diesel exhaust pollution to thousands of acres of crops? And if this is so necessary, why am I seeing quotes in the newspaper from the developer saying how much fun" it is to work on this railroad. And "how many chances do you get in life to build a railroad"? This isn't a hobby!! And it isn't a model sitting on a table. It affects hundreds of properties and owners, farmers and roads, animals and crops."
