Docket No. FD 35952 Environmental Comments Much of the land in West Creek Township was inhabited by Indian Tribes going back as far as 13,000 years ago. They continued to live along the banks of the West Creek in the Township for hundreds of years. These tribes were largely Potawatomie and they left behind burial grounds, fire pits for cooking and others for ceremonial purposes along with artifacts that are irreplaceable. Ceremonial fire pits on our farm are directly in the path of the proposed Great Lakes Basin’s rail line. Numerous tribal artifacts surround these fire pits and would be destroyed. We can’t afford to lose this historic site for a train that really isn’t needed. So far The GLBR is planning to build a high speed rail line to haul hazardous materials through this land with no one contracted or interested in leasing the tracks. The GLBR has no experience building trains or running a railroad. They own no rail cars or equipment and don’t plan to do so. They plan to sell off a portion of their acquired right-of-way to utility companies to make a profit at our expense. Then they plan to lease the tracks to other rail companies in order to make money. To date not one single rail company is interested in leasing these tracks. All of them have been spending money improving their own lines. If the rail line is built and no one leases it, the rail line will be abandoned and all of the land they have taken will be permanently destroyed. For all of the reasons listed above we are asking the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to deny the project. Thank you for your consideration. Patricia Mussman West Creek Township Lake County, IN
