Docket No. FD 35952 Environmental Comments Water contamination is a very large concern for South Lake County Indiana. With a proposed high speed rail line by Great Lakes Basin Transportation carrying up to 2000 + types of hazardous materials spills and leaks of these materials is a very real possibility. There was just a “Haz-mat” derailment in Washington DC Sunday, May 1, 2016. Another disastrous train derailment occurred in Canada in July of 2013, the “Lac-Megantic” created massive damage to the area including contaminated ground water. Because our water shed is the Kankakee River south Lake County is totally dependent on ground water wells. Water is our most important resource without it there could be no inhabitants that would include both human and various types of wildlife. Because of the field tiles that run through all of the farmland in the area the contamination would travel to the Kankakee River that would kill wildlife that depends upon the river for survival. The contamination would continue down river to Illinois where people in the towns and cities that border the river draw their water. For these reasons we are appealing to the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to deny the project and preserve the environment. Thank you. Patricia Mussman West Creek Township Lake County, IN
