More suburban sprawl: this will be the likely impact of the proposed Great Lakes Basin Transportation" rail line in Northwest Indiana, as businesses and intermodal centers are built along the line outside of existing urban areas. This will very likely lead to continued loss of farmland and wild habitat, and hydrology problems, as well as urban decay and distress in the Region's core cities--Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago--as yet more resources are drained away from the urban core and pulled to the suburbs. Refer to the "Costs of Sprawl" 2000 Report for a detailed discussion of environmental, economic, and social impacts of continued sprawl. Far from being visionary, this is a very shortsighted project. It would be wiser to invest in separating at-grade crossings along existing rail lines in the Region."
