[Clinton] I oppose the Great Lakes Basin Transportation rail project in Rock County, WI because of the loss of vital farmland. Twenty four acres of land will be disturbed per mile of track; this does not include the soil taken from borrow pits necessary for the building of ramps for overpasses. Much of the soil that will be disturbed or taken out of production is plano silt loam, considered to be one of the best crop production soil types in the world. Once this soil is radically disturbed, it can never be replaced. In addition, many acres of farmland will no longer be in crop production due to isolation from the farmer's main acreage, or due to re-sizing and re-shaping that does not allow access by large farm equipment. Preservation of prime farmland is of high priority, as once lost, it is never fully regained. Loss of highly productive cropland and loss of the world's best soil is unacceptable, and reason for you to reject GLBT's proposal.
