[Lowell] Docket No. FD 35952 Environmental Comment Referencing the “Lac-Megantic” rail disaster, derailments are a serious concern as well as oil, fuel and chemical spills caused by trains transporting hazardous materials. In the case of the GLBR they are planning to build a high speed railroad track(s) with trains traveling up to 70 mph over tracks with many twists and turns along the route. This is a serious danger for school buses, farm machinery, protected water wells, sewage treatment plants, Buckley Homestead County Park and others traveling over these rail crossings. The route selected by the GLBR comes perilously close to schools and a natural gas pumping station. A derailment or accident would cause serious damage to the environment by contaminating ground water and killing vegetation. Wild life would be affected with a contaminated water source. Most fire departments in the areas this rail line is traveling are made up of volunteers. They are going to be faced with having to be trained to deal with methods to handle potential catastrophic incidents. The need for additional equipment would be inevitable at an additional expense to the taxpayers who would be losing tax revenue due to the loss of tax income from the included in the easement. This is a serious safety issue that endangers anyone living along the route, emergency service personnel and school children in the schools along the route and the buses transporting them.
