I have been reading all of the information coming out about the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad that will be traveling from WI to IN. I live about 1/2 mile from where the railroad will cross Rt 49 in Porter County, IN. It is very easy to to take a not in my back yard" stance on this. However, in looking at the route, I am terrified of how close this will be passing to two schools along the route. In Lake County, IN, it passes 1/2 mile from the Lowell IN elementary school and here in Porter County, it passes about 1/4 mile from the Morgan Township School system. This is far too close for comfort. Not just in my area, but in all areas involved, there is insufficient knowledge and preparation to deal with a rail disaster. I have seen the footage from Lac-Megantic, QC and am horrified at the destruction wrought by the crash of a single freight train. And if this is near one of our schools??? These DOT-111 cars that are included in virtually every freight train do not belong within 4 miles of a town like Valparaiso, IN. The proposed route in IN would cut off Hebron and Kouts from the rest of Porter County. I have so many objections to this proposal, I hope that this has not been too dis-jointed! Please take these into consideration when the time comes to think about this railroad proposal. Thank you very much."
