As a teacher of elementary special needs children at Morgan School, I am highly concerned about the Great Lakes Basin Railroad going through our area, so close to the school. I teach many autistic children as well as emotionally disabled, health impaired with ADD, and learning disabled children. Many of these children have heightened perceptions and reactions to sounds, lights and distractions. Having frequent train whistles, horns, rattling and vibrations from trains on tracks, etc. will be a constant disruption in our school day. My autistic children are greatly bothered by just the 'once a month' siren testing of the volunteer fire dept. Sometimes the screaming and head-banging begins over what we perceive as small factors; often I can't even hear what they hear and react to. Please, please consider theses special needs children and all our children being instructed at Morgan school We, the staff, and the children work hard to be top in the state of IN. Our special needs kids already start out life with the 'short end of the stick'. We can't jeopardize their learning and well-being by multiple trains crossing all throughout their school day. Thank you for taking their needs into your consideration.
