I am very concerned about the proposed rail line running through Porter County Indiana and the negative affects it will have on my family. I have several concerns. 1. The safety of my children who attend Boone Grove (Porter Township) Elementary and Middle School. These tracks are not far from this school and with the potential to carry hazardous materials it is a scary thought to think of a derailment. A derailment that none of our local voluntary fire departments have the equipment to properly respond to. 2. The time it takes my kids to get to school could now be significantly longer than it already is not to mention not as safe with having to cross railroad tracks. 3. My daughter who has a learning disability and who is easily distracted will now have an even harder time concentrating on her work due to the constant train noise and vibration. My son will no longer have the ability to hear his classmates at recess nor will we be able to enjoy their baseball/softball games in the summer due to the noise. 4. There will be extended response times for emergencies all over our township due to Emergency responders having to wait for trains or go around them. Also, a lot of our fire departments have to rely on neighboring departments for back-up when a fire etc. is more than one department can handle. Now that backup could take much longer to arrive putting not just the residents and property in danger but our firefighters as well. 5. One of our favorite parks will be affected by the noise of this also. Stony Run will no longer be the peaceful place to go hiking through nature. 6. We moved to this area for the quiet open spaces. This rail line would destroy that. A train could go by every 13 minutes and last 3-5 minutes. 7. This process seems very rushed and there has not been an effort by this company or the STB to inform and/or involve the community.
