It is my position that I greatly oppose this for numerous reasons. Environment impact is of paramount concern. The farmland lost that can never be reclaimed. Illinois has some of the most fertile soil in the world. Another environmental impact is the increase of wetland created by the changes in the drainage. Add to that the natural habitat irrevocably lost. Another negative impact is the financial burden to local governments, the state of Illinois, and small communities. The proposed railroad will be moving at a high rate of speed and the risk of derailment is higher as speeds increase. Our local volunteer fire departments are not equipped to handle the hazardous materials these trains will be carrying. Also, it is pretty apparent that all of the small country roads that currently exist will not all remain open because of the lack of feasibility to put crossings on all of them. This too affects response times for first responders for fire and emt calls. These road closures will cause an increase in the amount of farm equipment that travels on the heavier trafficked roads as opposed to the smaller country roads. Each on their own, and all of the above statements are valid reasons why this railroad should be blocked. As a citizen, hear my voice when I ask that you say no when it comes time to vote on docket number FD35952 and block the Great Lakes Basin Railroad Project. Respectfully, Sandra K. Bruch
