Dear Mr. Navecky: We are writing to voice our opposition to the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad. We feel strongly that this project is unnecessary, as there are other railroads in the vicinity that could be utilized instead of building another one. We live in Spring Township, which is prime farmland that can never be reclaimed after it is mutilated by this project. We all know that the EPA is ferocious in its defense of swamps and waterways, but for some reason the agency seems to ignore the loss of farmland and native wildlife that would be the result of this project. Another concern is the lack of transparency by the developers regarding who is backing this project and what their long-term plans are for the land they hope to obtain by whatever means they can. If the secret backers are able to use eminent domain to seize land for this private enterprise, that stinks. Please use your influence to put a stop to this before it goes further. The threat of this has already caused much consternation to the residents who live in the vicinity of this project. If you have never lived in a rural area, it may be impossible for you to realize how this would impact our quality of life and how difficult it will be for farmers to utilize their land after it has been carved up by an unnecessary railroad. We ask you to give thoughtful consideration to the thousands of families who will be affected by this railroad that is being built only to enrich unnamed financiers.
