Our school buses already cross a number of very busy railroad crossings in our district; safety and delays are a constant issue with student transportation. This proposed rail line will cause an additional safety obstacle for our children. We have several buses that would cross this set of tracks (despite the new line not actually going through our school district). We transport students from the State Prison in Westville (children of employees who live on the prison grounds); these students/buses would have to cross the tracks where they intersect with Hwy 421. We also send several special education buses to Laporte; these students would have to cross Hwy 39. If this new rail line is to become reality, can it be required that they install overpasses when crossing State and Federal Highways? Also, the closure of crossings would increase travel time and costs for school buses (as would the expected 110 trains per day mentioned in the press release). Please keep the safety of our children in mind as this project is deliberated.
