FD 35852 · CANAVERAL PORT AUTHORITY - PETITION FOR EXEMPTION TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT CANAVERAL, FL

Comment EI-20826

Received or sent (printed as 12/19/2014)

The proposed railroad develop a barrier and subdivide a large section of environmentally sensitive undisturbed land. This rail road barrier separating a large area into 2 smaller tracts may destroy the survivability of some animal species in the affected area. The proposed railroad track could be an environmental disaster for some animal species. The preferred route would be parallel and close to Route 528 to prevent the destruction of sensitive environmental habitat that has been an environmentally protected area for Cape Canaveral. Many species of animals require a minimum amount of land for food and survival. These areas may be 20 acres for a single family of Scrub Jays and 100 acres for breeding purposes or many square miles for other species. There are 22 Threatened or Endangered animal species and 56 species of special concern listed in LISTED SPECIES OF THE MERRITT ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE which could be the same for the area of the proposed railroad extension. http://www.nbbd.com/godo/minwr/ListedSpecies.html Each of these species should be studied to determine the area that species needs to be sustainable. The proposed railroad extension should not subdivide the undisturbed land of either of the 2 areas into a parcel unable to support breeding populations for any of these 78 Threatened, Endangered, or special concern animal species.
