FD 35852 · CANAVERAL PORT AUTHORITY - PETITION FOR EXEMPTION TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT CANAVERAL, FL

Comment EI-20816

I have written before, but am writing again to offer the alternative to this proposal to route a major commercial rail line through a National Wildlfe Preserve. According to the studies, there is another route that was an option-- to go straight across from the Port Canaveral West, parallel to the existing highway 528. The reason this option was at the bottom of their list, was cost: because it would span 2 rivers, there needs to be 2 bridges built. However, this new development of a commercial container port would bring in billions of dollars over the next decade-- and there are very deep pockets behind this project, so let them finance the 2 bridges. The cost is not worth destroying the last natural area on the Eat Central Florida Coast, or disrupting the quality of life for citizens who chose to locate their homes here because of the quiet peaceful atmosphere. I am against the expansion of a container port in this area, because it will forever change the beauty of the Port area into just another urbanized part of Florida. Attached are some copied-and-p[asted articles I have gathered that show how other areas of Florida can bring in more jobs and respond favorably to the increasing demand to move cargo in and out of Florida. Please do not bring this Port Canaveral into the mix-- it is only because of LOCAL INTERESTS (specifically including John Walsh, the head of the Canaveral Port Authority) who are basing their desire for personal profit as the reason behind this ill-advised proposal. The issue of bringing jobs to Florida is addressed by the expansion of all the existing Ports in Florida, now. Please note the final paragraph attached, that is from a Jacksonville, FL business publication, that references a company Gulftainer" who have made a deal for $100 to the Port Authority to expand the container business of the port. There is no reason other than cost, when comparing this proposal to the one to route the rail line directly West to the City of Cocoa, to connect with the main line, why the alternative cannot be preferred. Thank you."
