FD 35852 · CANAVERAL PORT AUTHORITY - PETITION FOR EXEMPTION TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT CANAVERAL, FL

I'm a long time resident of Brevard County and Merritt Island - The Savannahs specifically. I've attached a submittal generated by a friend that has details of impacts the Proposed Rail system would have to our area. My own thoughts on this proposed project are: the impact to traffic entering / exiting the CCAFS South gate during peak hours (huge impact); the physical and environmental damage created in the Banana River, as causeways and trestle structures are built (huge impact); the same issue should be considered when the rail transitions to land and tracks North through the Merritt Island Wildlife Sanctuary, across Hall Rd, through KARS Park and along the north east bank of Merritt Island (again(huge impact); what is the acoustic reduction plan for the installed rail system for those areas mentioned above (nothing is planned per Port Commissioner W. Justice). I'm a resident of The Savannahs community and based on sound reasoning (nothing will be built in a wildlife sanctuary and the peacefulness of North MI)we decided to stay in our home of 21 years and retire here. Property values will plummet, life here will drastically change for the worse if this project goes through. The CPA states thousands of high paying jobs would be coming along with this system, but I don't see it. We're talking mid-low paying jobs like stevedores, equipment operators, laborers etc., and not that many more than what is currently contracted for. We have enough industry in the Port with the addition of the expanded Cruise industry without adding the burden of a proposed rail system that benefits very few entities but impacts and burdens the entire community of central Brevard county. One last comment - I attended the meeting at the Radisson on the 19th and posed the question of what was the reason for the construction in the North Port, off of SR 401 between the Fuel Tank Storage area and west to the old Space Hab facility located on the south side of SR 401. No one could answer me - it's ironic that per the drawings on all of the whiteboards in that meeting, it depicted the rail line moving south to the water's edge. That construction is still going on to date.
