FD 35852 · CANAVERAL PORT AUTHORITY - PETITION FOR EXEMPTION TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT CANAVERAL, FL

Comment EI-20770

Mr. Navecky: I am attaching a file that was prepared by Dale Corey, another resident in my neighborhood, The Savannahs at Sykes Creek. She has prepared an excellent document that covers the issues at hand. I am including a few remarks of my own in an attempt to convey my concern for this project. My property is one of the closest to the proposed Port Canaveral Rail Extension and, as such, has me very concerned. We have only lived in this development for 3.5 years. The main reason we moved here was for the peace and quiet as well as the beautiful environmentally protected areas and ecosystems. I seriously doubt that the beginning traffic flow on this rail line of a few trains a week will be honored for long. I am loathe to think of the noise that will be created from the commercial ships loading and unloading. The thought that the port will be turned into a booming commercial shipping enterprise is disturbing. The RORO (Roll on, Roll off) of the ships carrying vehicles is one example of the noise pollution. The talk" of the area is how we will become the highest volume port on the East Coast for the vehicle ships and how many jobs will be created. It seems to me that the info we are being provided about the train traffic is bogus. I believe we are being horribly mislead and I challenge you to obtain the truth from the Port Officials. My husband and I spent Sunday at the Blackpoint Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island National Wildlife Preserve. We drove around enjoying the birds and alligators and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Blackpoint Drive parallels the railroad and on any given day, there are many, many people out there enjoying nature, taking pictures and observing the wildlife. We hiked on Scrub Jay trail and watched those protected scrub jays flying around and chirping to each other. I don’t think those birds are going to appreciate train noise! I request that you make time for a visit and come spend a day and see for yourself the unspoiled areas that would be ruined by the rail extension project. There aren't many areas like this left in the world and it would be a waste to lose it to a railway. Thank you for reviewing all the comments provided on this project and I can only hope that the outcome is that the railway extension in our area is not approved."
