FD 35852 · CANAVERAL PORT AUTHORITY - PETITION FOR EXEMPTION TO CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE A RAIL LINE EXTENSION TO PORT CANAVERAL, FL

Comment EI-20660

Received or sent (printed as 11/22/2014)

I am a resident of The Savannahs, a neighborhood within 1 mile of the proposed route of the proposed rail line. I am also an employee of Kennedy Space Center, and a strong advocate of the US Space Program. Because of these two factors, I have logical and emotional leanings for and against the proposal, but in balance I cannot support it. While the impact of the installation and use of the rail line would probably have a limited personal impact, I am also a very strong advocate of environmental protection and the harm this project would wreak throughout its life is incalculable. It is the cumulative effect of the noise, physical disruption of a nature preserve, loss of freedom of movement, pollution of every description, destruction of precious remaining wildlife habitat and waterways, and disregard for the qualities of this community (Merritt Island) that we residents treasure that makes this project so unacceptable. I grant that in an effort to increase its position in port operations the PCA feels this is a natural, responsible action to take. But the price to be paid is NOT justified by the few who would benefit. If port operations are not able to expand within the infrastructure available today, then local residents and environment should not be sacrificed so that outside commercial interests are served.
