Comment EI-9402

Received or sent (printed as 8/29/2008)

I urge you to reject the CN's proposed purchase of the EJ&J. After attending last night's meeting in Bartlett and reviewing the maps with representatives from your office, I realized that, in the event of backups, my neighborhood could literally be cut off by trains and become an island. The thought of not being able to get out, or not being able to get home, frightens me. And not just in the event of dire emergencies. The value of my home will plummet. The roads around my neighborhood will see significantly increased traffic as people try to drive around the trains. If there is a spill, my well water will be contaminated. I bought this home four years ago, and realizing it was near train tracks, I was assured that only a few trains go by each day, and those usually at night. I would not have purchased this home had I understood that a railroad like CN would be allowed to endanger the community's health, saftey and quality of life. There are other alternatives to reduce rail congestion in Chicago than this purchase. Consider CREATE, or moving rail traffic to rural areas farther west where there are far fewer homes. There are no reasonable, affordable ways to mitigate the environmental impact of this purchase on the communities that will be affected. Please do not approve this purchase. Respectfully, Karen Kaluzsa
