June 26, 2008 Ms. Anne K. Quinlan, Esq. Acting Secretary Surface Transportation Board 395 E Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20423-0001 Re: CN’s Proposed Acquisition of Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway (EJE) Dear Ms. Anne K. Quinlan, I am writing to you to communicate my unequivocal support for CN’s proposed acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway (EJE). In this day and age of increasing gas prices, poor air quality and rising taxes, it is clear that we need to find viable alternatives to business as usual policies. If approved, the acquisition of the EJE by the CN would bring the following benefits to the US economy and Chicago land area. 1) Increase efficiency and service to current rail customers. 2) Congestion relief to many other communities in the Chicago land area. 3) Reduce truck highway congestion and overall gas consumption. (Not to mention that rail has been shown to emit six times less greenhouse gas than heavy trucks.) 4) Reduce Federal and State taxpayer dollars for CREATE project. In closing, I realize that although some communities will experience congestion relief, others will see proportional increase in rail traffic. In my opinion, a few vocal communities should not be allowed to decide this proposed acquisition. Rather, the overall benefits to the US economy and greater Chicago land area should be the deciding factor for this proposed acquisition. Let’s focus on the benefits to the environment, tax reduction, decrease in highway congestion, lowering our dependence on foreign oil and overall US economy.
