I am writing to let you know my opinion of the above mentioned purchase. Recently, I attended a town meeting to discuss the impact that this purchase would have on the residents of Wayne, Illinois, and all the towns, big and small along this rail track. It is so scary to think that our federal government would allow a foreign company to come in and disrupt our way of life for the pure monetary advantage of the railway. People who live in Wayne choose to do so because of the great forest preserve parcels, open land, and extremely quiet way of life. The fact that our residents are hugely invested in equestrian events speaks to the way of life for our town. By allowing this purchase to take place, our small town will be crippled by the closure of the only two east-west thoroughfares. Allowing 24 trains per day will virtually shut down all traffic through town, not to mention the added noise and car exhaust pollution. How will ambulances get through town? What about the numerous school buses that travel through town to our local elementary school? How about the $120 million dollars that the taxpayers are spending to build a bridge over the Fox River on Stearns Road? What would be the point if the traffic cannot get past the railroad tracks? It is apparent that Mayor Richard Daley would support this purchase because he wants the traffic OUT of his city. I would hope that our local officials would be brave enough to stand up to Mr. Daley, and the Surface Transportation Board, to express our dissatisfaction with purchase. The possible environmental impact from a hazardous waste spill cannot even be measured. EVERYONE in our town is on a private well. Imagine the cost to life, and the area if this should happen. There are not safeguards in place to avoid this. DuPage County has been known to have one of the highest property values in the entire country. This would definitely change if the train traffic increases to the amount that is being projected. As a taxpayer, and registered voter, I am urging you to do all that you can to help us fight this foreign invasion. Respectfully Submitted, Peggy and Gary Golnick 4N101 Woodland Ct.
