Regarding Canadian National Railways' (CN) plan to buy Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railways (EJ&E), I would like to make a comment on how difficult it will makes lives of people living by EJ&E corrider if the sale goes through. 1. Number of trains on EJ&E tracks goes up from an average of 10 to 45 (350% increase) while it is only going down from 4 to 0 from the current CN tracks. The negative impact on people on EJ&E is far greater than the little positive impact on please living by the current CN tracks. 2. Most of the railroad crossings on EJ&E are at-grade crossings. This acquisition will guarantee to increase commute time by by at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. 3. Noise pollusion will multiply several times. Again, the negative impact is far more than the positive impact. 4. Experiencing vibrations 5 or 6 times a day is bearable. Experiencing the same twice every hour will seem like living in a earthquake-prone zone. 5. Most at-grade crossings are not quiet zones. This would imply that we will have to hear train whistles constantly (literally). Request/Suggestion: If the acquisition is not stoppable, I request that CN utilize their existing lines and the newly acquired EJ&E lines. Instead of increasing EJ&E traffic from 10 to 45, please consider splitting the number of trains between EJ&E and currently owned CN lines. Going from 10 to 15 is more bearable and will have less negative impact on people and environment. People move to the suburbs for good reasons and noise pollution, vibrations, long waits at grade crossings are definitely not among them. Please consider the huge negative impact this acquisition has on all the people living by EJ&E and compare that to the little or no positive impact it will have to the poeple living by current CN tracks.
